Black Thursday

Numbers donned by marquee signs
vanished late Thursday night.

Men in cashmere coats
acquiesced to flashing zeroes.

Suddenly
worthless,
devoid of purpose,
and paper Gods long
worshiped without
sacrifice or sermons
turn vindictive;

thus they
turned man’s sickness
to plague and, just to take
us down one peg more,

timed it against
our unfit leaders.
