Signal – Candice Daquin

We are just girls
Sending out waves
Into perishing night
Distance and storms
surrounding
Humming of one thought to another
Feels lost in time, a thinning fabric too sheer for weight
Yet I hear you
I hear the shape your mouth makes speaking
Intonation and ragged breathing
When you put the next record on
Turning needle softly to darkling vinyl
She speaks for us both
I drew your outline in settled dust with wetted finger
In past, present and future, hours devouring hours
Around and around goes the summon
No words, just the music of an era held in suspension
Whispering thoughts that scatter like yellowed dice
Snuff the candle, feel wax burn in molten lore
The inside of your wrist turned sharp against scorn
Knife’s edge whetting trace, pulse lustily imitates
In tangent we move till air no more
Before we put our clothes back on, inside out
Face the outside, masks lost to the roar
Once, twice, eventually become inured to cold
Noble are the waves, summoning from deep, this favour, this moment.
