It’s been a while since we’ve shared our favourite prompt responses. March was a relatively quiet writing month but this week’s prompt drew in several responses, so here they are. Thank you to those who shared their work with us!
Life’s cruelty held me down
it dampened me
became hardened even
but there lays
It resides deep down
in the folds of my being
From this place of
I will emerge
I will rise
Watch me become
As fatherhood is rapidly approaching my life,
I reflect on the enrichment, added by my wife.
Opening the door to the softness of my soul,
teaching me the beauty of self-control.
How to gather a diamond, from a piece of coal,
while using family, as our supreme goal.
From understanding the rain, to feeling the sun,
the warmth of a love, that I didn’t shun.
Now sharing in the blessing of having a son,
knowing that our lives have just begun.
She adds the light, when I dwell in the dark,
when I want to give up, she adds the spark.
She teaches me more, than she will ever grasp,
a love so pure, that it will make one gasp.
She is the definition of what love should be,
showering me with her devotion, so effortlessly.
When I think of my past, she pulls me away,
keeping me grounded, in the present day.
When Asher is born, it won’t outweigh,
it will only add to the love, that I feel today.
A poppy grows in hell
Beside the bones of youth, lost
A single splash of hope
Against the chaos and unrest.
The bent backs of trees,
Wooden cenotaphs of untold stories,
Await on silent prayers
This winter of men to be done.
In the silence of horizons far away,
Broken dreams of home that can’t be met
And all we have are ghosts to tip our hats
And the smiles of those children who walk next.
A poppy grows in summer
Beside the roll of fields, green
A single splash of red
A rebirth, a promise kept?
