School of Naught (2014)

The greatest lesson I
can leave with you is
you don’t need
recorded proof
you’re worth
your grand endeavours;

I’ve watched so
many gold stars
go out with
mathematical precision because of
blackboard equations trying to
solve their indecision.

You can’t engineer
bridges connecting
ambition over
bodies of fear if you have
never secured something in
the water to its pier.

So to those with
their heads down on
their desk,

I say let’s
shoot for
the stars
and see where
we drop, arms wrought around
everything we hold

Even if it turns out
to be for

we were meteors eight whole seconds,
and we went out like the best
of them,

canyons that state “a

classroom stood here.”
