dragon sleigh

we were dragons once.

vagabonds of violet sky
with God in our heads,

vigilantes to the
laws of sun.

weaponry without guns,
voices
feared and coveted.

stone towers collapsed like
straw houses,
the markets surrounded by

them amounted
to ash.

we were dragons once,
living cataclysms to
those trapped beneath our wings,

but never did

we ignite the world before
falling captive.

never would I have set out to
level maps
or kidnap their
queens before

being
christened
dangerous game.

creature in a cage,
their rage trophy,
letting gold
scales atrophy
and grey.

we were dragons once,
now I’m agony,

escaped;

mourning our majesty before
they captured me and
dispatched you;

now I’m
the monster
they set out

to create.
