monsters among us

fires in the chest,
a dragon’s teeth strung around
my neck;

these are the
wisdoms collected
learning to speak

in Fahrenheit.

wingspans long
coveted merely resulted
in knocking
castles down.

becoming
cold blooded’s a
cudgel love ends
up defenseless
without.

halitosis that
deftly ignites is the price
I’ve paid for learning smoke’s
dialect

with scaling
effects

making all these
syllable
matches,
papers catching them
the striking act.

horizons
left barren from
above like

water under
the weight of
oil

where
my slumber
was foiled with
pointed sticks

ain’t true
ascendancy,

only one tendency of
life forms taking
violent flight.

tonight I’m a fire
drake with
a kingdom’s fate in
my mandible,
jaded by the
very warmth I
wanted to emit.

tonight, a sleeping giant wakes
where old anger lied in wait,

a caged animal ultimately
most afraid of
itself.
