Changing Water

The surface has
darkened,

carcinogens in
the currents rising to
the top.

Was too lost in the haze to
try and place when
I paid this havoc
much attention last;

my lungs push back
against the
smoke on

morning waters,

iconoclasts drowning
in a sea of
symbols.

Not of
nimble breath or
courage,
nor for the
weak stomach which
turns at
second-hand clouds.

All I ever envisioned

was to do
someone proud,

aspiration further addled
by fashionable
decline.

All I ever wanted
was making
you
mine,

a dependence
supplemented where
the hit and
bubbling water
collide.
