Sweetness ’16

A promise not to
fall in
love
with
you
turned skies
ocean blue,
twisted
technicolour
hues from a
monochromatic
muse.

Yet I’ve
grappled with
this spectrum,
its early
sepia
clues.

This poem is
my promise

(platitudes in the plural)

our narrative will
always be
a stain on
my black
and white
heart,

shades of grey that
have never
bloomed prior.

You’re a current of
brightness
in rivers
coaxing exhaustion
out to
sea.

They long
tired
pushing
beauty to the surface-

(doing so serves
few purposes, if
it can’t
tread water without a
tourniquet of waves).

May all your dreams
wash ashore where you
sit in
sand and
wait for
me.
