Welcome to the Freak Show

We all
have our monster masks,
concealed
makeshift hatchets.

I wish they
only lasted
a single night.

It’s the
human face that scares me,
worn as
a parody on unbearably bad
costumes.

One night
per year, ghosts and ghouls
streak through the streets;
cute nurses
hope to meet wolf-men whose
affection for smooth skin
never rests.

One night
in October, some come
hideous but none
go sober in
corn syrup sportsmanship.

Orange is
hip tonight, our
young lives small
scares and
smoke machines.

Welcome to the freak show;

You can take
off the mask, but you’ll never
want to leave.
