Scorched Earth Soliloquy

You and I on fire like someone
took exposed wires,
made them kiss;

ignited sparks and aimed them
at everything I once
missed

about infernos.

It took this furlough from
safety to realize how much we’re
changing in opposite
directions,

from where the
match first
danced with our
flammable
affections.

Oh, how
fast we catch in the name of
context,

twisted
and licking,
screaming, still
kicking,

forces of destruction obsessed with
fixing what we
don’t acknowledge as
broken.

You and I are
scorched earth
policy
frozen

in time.
