Darkest Below Dawn

Like a virus
decimating
entire populations;

bacterial plagues
playing childish
games of
tag with

human welfare;

a health scare that
spares no corner
and leaves no

infant or
elder
untouched;

this influenza ain’t
no twenty-four
hour bug.

This is
the cancer we allowed
to dance alongside our
American
Dream.

Standards of
living obsolete,
political gridlock and
construction that
reaches several
city blocks

erodes my sleep to build
a benign future
towering over
stop signs
for anything more
ambitious in an age
of attrition,

austere by
design.

And if I had the
courage to
climb one of those
skyscrapers, look out
at the skyline,

razor-thin
sheets of morning’s
first light

I’d ask myself what
the hell was so
important about its
owner,

they needed to
stand upon the backs of
those lower than themselves

to tell us their monument
deserved to be on par
with sunrise,

while the
rest of us
breathe in the

darkest smogs below.
