Amalgam MMXIII Part I

Last year, I attempted to take every poem written within 2012 and create an amalgam of my favourite stanzas. That piece, 2012 Redux, was one of the most rewarding poems written all year. This year, I have decided to repeat the experience, but a little differently. Instead of toiling away at a 1000-word poem, I will be releasing between 5 and 10 different parts during the final weeks of 2013.

This is the first. Hope you all enjoy, and thank you for the continued support.

***

I was seventeen when
we recorded
each lie
youth’s
revolutionaries
told us,

but the
auroras in
our eyes
have long since
gone.

Bitten by
spectral
rain,

I’ll propel my
self to the top
if only to
remodel
rock
bottom.

Look
back through
old prose that damaged
hindsight;

am I merely
one sage
reviewing the
cage that supposedly
granted
him
a waltz in the
darkness to escort him

closer

to
calm, then to ripples.

These days I’m a
motherfucking
wave.

Wine stains on
the carpet,
a black bra
drapes the
armrest.

I told her
we have to look good for
a world that’s always dressed
in Sunday clothes.

Her indoctrination
slow,
until my index
finger recited

the same
brand of
madness like
numbers on
a rotary phone.

Nothing rhymes with
orange?

Oh Lord,
it’s this morbid
argument,
the concept
ain’t foreign anymore, and

I’ll go
through a forest’s
worth of trees
just trying to
court
your horizons,

take ’em out back and
hide ’em from this
ambitious inconsistency,

my contingency to the knowledge time
will someday divide
us like oil and
fire, set us off like water
and live wires before we retire from
each other’s
company.

Love, I’ll tell her
is too rare a
commodity
because the girl
I’m in love with
is too
technologically
advanced
for me to
ask for

one single dance.

I’m god damn kerosene
without the
benefit of
a
burning match.
